There was a time when everyday was an occasion for wearing black. Men practically wear the color during the day. Unlike today, black is only worn mostly during important events such as formal parties, opera concerts, red-carpet events and the like. The Victorian era was witness to this trend of wearing the color anytime of the day. Because the color is also associated with mourning, the materials used in creating a suit out of that color were not of the finest quality. Probably due to sheer exhaustion in seeing the dark color, at the turn of the 20th century, people decided to don on any other color of clothing. It was only in the later part of that century that wearing a black suit was considered elegant and very formal. The materials used in designing these suits include wool, flannel, tweed, gabardine, and fresco. The weather can also dictate what type of suit is best suited for the occasion, linens, cotton seersucker, cashmere and silk are preferred during warm weather.
